TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting
constables on Fishers Island in the town of Southold, Suffolk county,
peace officer status
 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To grant peace officer status to the constables of Fisher's Island in
the town of Southold.
 
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by
adding a new subdivision 87.
Section 2. Effective date.
 
JUSTIFICATION:
Currently, there is one state trooper assigned to police Fisher's
Island. If there is a situation where backup is needed, that trooper
would have to wait over an hour for help to arrive. Giving the consta-
bles peace officer status provides the needed police assistance and
creates a much safer environment.
 
PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
New bill.
 
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
None.
 
EFFECTIVE DATE:
Immediately.

AN ACT to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting
constables on Fishers Island in the town of Southold, Suffolk county,
peace officer status
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. Section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by
2 adding a new subdivision 87 to read as follows:
3 87. Persons employed by Fishers Island in the town of Southold,
4 Suffolk county, as constables.
5 § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.

[] is old law to be omitted.
