Assemblyman Colton Leads Another Successful Community Cleanup
Wielding brooms and trash bags, approximately 50 local volunteers led by Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) participated in a community cleanup on Saturday, July 20.
The cleanup was also sponsored by City Councilmember Susan Zhuang (D— Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Dyker Heights, Boro Park and Sunset Park) and the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS).
The teams of volunteers worked to remove trash and debris from 86th street between 25th Avenue and 17th Avenue, and Bay Parkway between 65th Street and 68th Street. Community leader Steve Chan and his wife and daughter also joined in the cleanup.
“I am delighted that so many dedicated volunteers turned out again to help clean up our neighborhood,” said Assemblyman Colton. “Their participation is so important on so many levels. Keeping our business strips clean makes them more inviting, which is a boon to both merchants and area residents. In addition, the willingness of all our volunteers to dedicate a portion of their free time to helping the community provides a terrific example for the community-at-large, reinforcing the importance of local involvement, which is a key to keeping neighborhoods strong and thriving.”
"My office was delighted to join Assemblyman Colton in helping clean up our community. Dozens of volunteers joined us to help clean our streets and make our community safer for everyone," said Councilmember Zhuang. "I would like to thank everyone who assisted and look forward to holding another community clean up again soon."
Assemblyman Colton has led community cleanups focusing on the area’s bustling business areas for over a decade, aided by Councilmember Zhuang, his then-chief-of-staff. The duo will sponsor several along the neighborhood’s busy commercial strips through the summer and fall. The next cleanup will take place on August 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at 29 Bay 25th Street. People interested in participating should reach out to Assemblyman Colton’s office at 718-236-1598.
