Assemblyman Colton Applauds Dr. Law’s Appointment to State AAPI Commission
Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) is delighted to congratulate community stalwart Dr. Tim Law, the founder of the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS), who has been appointed to the New York State Asian American and Pacific Islander Commission by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Dr. Law, who recently was recognized by AARP for his decades of service to the community with the prestigious Andrus Award, is one of six people named late last month to the commission, which was founded in 2023 to advise the governor about policies and programs that can benefit the AAPI community. Noted Governor Hochul when she announced the appointment, “These new appointees to New York’s AAPI Commission are highly qualified individuals with a deep commitment to public service, and will play a critical role in the commission’s efforts.”
“I am delighted that Dr. Law has been chosen as a member of this important commission,” said Assemblyman Colton. “Over the years, he has done so much for our community. I know that he will approach his role on this commission as he has all of the other tasks he has undertaken over the years on behalf of the neighborhood and its residents, who have benefited immensely from his selfless dedication to bettering daily life for young and old alike.”
Dr. Law, who worked as an educator with the City’s Department of Education for over three decades, has had a distinguished career in public service since emigrating from China to the United States in 1968. Through such initiatives as CASS, which he founded after retiring from the DOE, he has worked tirelessly on behalf of the community. Over the years, he has helped residents who may have limited English proficiency navigate governmental bureaucracy to get services that can benefit them, including offering translation services, and organized voter registration drives and food giveaways as well as Chinese language classes for youngsters.
