Assemblyman Scott Gray Reassures Community on Claxton-Hepburn’s Future, Highlights Active State Engagement

In response to concerns about the financial condition of Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and its affiliated facilities, Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) is reassuring the community and hospital staff that preserving local health care services and protecting jobs remain top priorities.

Over the last 24 hours, Gray’s office has held productive conversations with the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Division of the Budget and staff in the governor’s office. These partners are fully apprised of the situation and are actively engaged in evaluating options to stabilize the facility. Gray also extends appreciation to Assembly Member Amy Paulin, chair of the Assembly Health Committee, and her office for their assistance and partnership in these efforts.

“Residents, patients and employees of Claxton-Hepburn deserve transparency and reassurance,” said Gray. “This office is working diligently with state partners to address the immediate fiscal concerns so that jobs remain stable and essential health care services within the community remain constant. There is strong confidence that the immediate concerns can be resolved.”

He noted that once near-term stability is secured, the focus must shift to a long-term plan that promotes job stability and continued provision of services without ongoing reliance on taxpayer money.

“Any transaction involving taxpayer funds must be fully transparent,” Gray added. “Taxpayers, patients and employees deserve clear information and safeguards to ensure every public dollar spent at Claxton or Carthage hospitals is used efficiently and in a way that strengthens health care in the community.”

Gray’s office will remain in close communication with state agencies and hospital stakeholders as work continues toward both short-term stabilization and long-term sustainability.

He expresses his gratitude to other state agencies and unions for their quick response yesterday, and especially to all the employees for their patience.
