Assemblyman Scott Gray Gives More Details on Advanced Nuclear Opportunities in Latest ‘Gray Area’ Episode
In the latest episode of “The Gray Area,” Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) discusses the North Country’s growing interest in hosting advanced nuclear technology, a development he says could bring good-paying jobs and major economic benefits to the region.
“Advanced nuclear technology has the potential to transform our energy landscape while creating hundreds of skilled trades and engineering jobs right here in the North Country,” said Gray. “This isn’t your grandfather’s nuclear energy — these new small and micro modular reactors are safe, efficient and designed to fit into our communities seamlessly as these facilities look like high-tech office buildings.”
Earlier this year, Gray hosted a forum in Alexandria Bay to educate local officials about emerging nuclear technologies. Now, he is turning the focus to the public with two upcoming informational sessions:
- Tuesday, Nov. 12
Jefferson Community College, in partnership with the Center for Community Studies - Wednesday, Nov. 13
Clarkson University
Experts from across New York and around the country will discuss how advanced nuclear systems could benefit potential host communities, including Fort Drum and Massena, both identified as promising locations for future projects.
“These projects create high-quality construction jobs in the short term and support long-term careers in operations and maintenance, not just for engineers, but for skilled trades workers as well,” said Gray. “In addition to that, there’s the demand side and what we call the offtakers to consider as well. Many high-energy-use companies — think of Micron in Central New York — are looking to locate near small modular reactors. So, not only are there good jobs and economic benefits for hosting one of these, but also real potential for new business growth. And these facilities are very safe. The nuclear industry has an excellent safety record.”
“As always, it’s an honor and a privilege to serve you. I look forward to the next edition of ‘The Gray Area’ and seeing you in the district.”
