Bendett: Knowledge Is Power

Assemblyman Scott Bendett (R,C-Sand Lake) is proud to support the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The program’s fall 2023 Breast Cancer Awareness slogan is “Knowledge: Paving the Way to Empowerment.” This campaign encourages women to take care of their breast health in three important ways. First, scheduling a mammogram to know where their breast health stands. Second, learning about breast cancer programs available in their community. And third, talking to a health care provider, caring physician or good Samaritan who can help.

“Breast cancer impacts so many women in our state and country year after year,” said Bendett. “Having hotlines and support programs available to women in our communities can help point them in the direction of resources and reliable health care services, or even just provide a listening ear if they are feeling overwhelmed in the face of breast cancer or other serious medical problems.”

“We are a shoulder to lean on,” said program director Reyna Machado. “We want to let New Yorkers know that we are here and always ready to help.”

Since 1980, the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work, has provided New Yorkers with information and emotional support as they battle breast cancer. The hotline, which operates every day of the year at 800-877-8077, is staffed by breast cancer survivors—women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and emerged to help others on their journey. When people call the hotline, volunteers can direct them to resources and listen to them when they are troubled. The program can be reached by phone or online at breast-cancer.adelphi.edu. You are not alone.
