Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C,I, SAM-Meco) showed his support for the American Legion and Private Harold Wilmot, as Post 137 celebrated the unveiling of its historical marker Friday in Gloversville. The William C. Pomeroy Foundation assisted in granting the legion building this official marker. Private Wilmot, a marine, was the reason for the legion’s creation in 1919. Private Wilmot was thought to be the first casualty of World War I in Fulton County. Post 137 is the oldest American Legion in Fulton County. It was established by Congressman Lucius Nathan Littauer, a former resident of Gloversville.

“The historical marker at Harold Wilmot Post 137 looks great. It is a fitting tribute to a local hero who fought for our freedom,” Smullen said. “Thank you to the members of the American Legion in Gloversville for the ceremony unveiling the marker provided by the William C. Pomeroy Foundation, and the hospitality afterward. I hope our community can continue to support our veterans through the American Legion, and understand the important sacrifices made by our soldiers overseas.”
