Assembly Member Kay Celebrates Successful First Responder Recognition Awards

Bloomingburg – Assembly Member Paula Elaine Kay (D-Rock Hill) expressed gratitude to all who attended the inaugural First Responder Recognition Awards ceremony, held November 12 at the Bloomingburg Firehouse.

The event brought together community members, local officials, and first responders from across Sullivan and Orange Counties to honor those who go above and beyond in the line of duty. The recipients were selected by a panel of local first responders.

This year’s honorees were Bill Lothrop of Sullivan County and Natalia A. Hernandez of Orange County. Ganesh Bhagwandeen received an honorable mention, and the late Billy Steinberg, a Forestburgh firefighter who gave his life in service to others, was recognized posthumously.

In addition to the awards Assembly Member Kay announced a $100,000 grant to the Bloomingburg Joint Fire District to assist in the construction of a new substation in the Burlingham area.

“I’m so proud of the men and women who serve our communities with courage and compassion,” said Assembly Member Kay. “This event was a powerful reminder that our strength lies in the people who are willing to step forward when others need help. I’m deeply thankful to everyone who joined us to show their support, and I’m honored to help strengthen the vital emergency infrastructure that keeps our residents safe.”

Assembly Member Kay also thanked the committee of first responders who selected this year’s recipients and the Bloomingburg Fire Company for hosting the event.
