Rozic, Stavisky Remind Parents to Schedule Gifted and Talented Tests for Children

Current protocol requires parents to “opt-in” to special testing

New state legislation would ensure more students have access to educational resources

Queens, NY – State Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Flushing) and State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) announce legislation to ensure that all students are screened for gifted and talented educational resources and remind New York families of the upcoming registration deadline for testing in January 2019. The deadline to schedule gifted and talented testing this academic year is November 9, 2018.

“All students deserve educational opportunities and it is my hope that by broadening access more students will enroll and benefit from specialized school instruction,” said Rozic. “Until that change is actualized, I want to remind those interested to schedule gifted and talented testing for your children.”

“Our gifted and talented programs are an effective way to challenge young people,” stated Stavisky. “It is important to identify these children at an early age and provide enriched classes and accelerated programs in every school district in the city. Our legislation would test all children for the gifted and talented programs unless the parent/guardian chooses not to have the child tested. I strongly encourage all parents/guardians to get their children tested as soon as possible so that each student can benefit from these programs.”

Devon Huang, President of the Chinese-American Parents Association said: “We applaud Assemblywoman Rozic and Senator Stavisky in their efforts to help identify gifted and talented students with this bill.  With the proper implementation, it will hopefully lead to better preparation and a more promising future for the many students that were previously not aware of opportunities available to them.”

Lumning Li, President of the Asian-American Coalition for Education said: “We endorse and support Assemblywoman Rozic and Senator Stavisky in their efforts to help identify gifted and talented students with this bill. With their help, many students who were previously not aware of opportunities available to them will be better prepared for their future.”

The Queens legislators sponsor legislation which would implement Gifted and Talented testing for all children automatically in an effort to increase access to specialized instruction and ultimately enhance academic achievement of students.
