Simpson Critical of NY HEAT Act, Citing Overwhelming Public Opposition and Cost Concerns
60% of voters oppose the NY HEAT ACT, 71% feel consumers should be able to choose what works best for them per recent poll from Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future.
Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) offered his criticism of the NY HEAT Act, citing its detrimental impact on consumer choice, affordability and energy reliability for New Yorkers. The New York Energy Survey, released this week, reveals overwhelming public opposition to the legislation, with 60% of New Yorkers opposing the HEAT Act and 71% supporting the right to choose their energy sources.
“The NY HEAT Act is an attack on the fundamental liberties of New Yorkers,” said Simpson. “This misguided legislation strips away our right to choose the energy that best suits our homes and budgets, forcing costly electrification while ignoring the clear will of the people. Eighty-two percent of New Yorkers say they prioritize affordability and 65% demand reliability, it’s evident this act is not only unpopular but also grossly out of touch. As energy bills soar and residents express concerns over their economic situation, we cannot afford policies that drive up costs and undermine the reliable, balanced energy approach that includes natural gas alongside renewables.”
The survey highlights that 63% of voters prioritize reducing cost burdens over a zero-carbon agenda that increases expenses and 59% oppose halting new natural gas supplies. Simpson emphasized that Albany must prioritize common-sense policies that respect consumer choice.
“The people have spoken clearly, and they want affordable, reliable energy and the freedom to make their own choices,” Simpson concluded.
Simpson calls on his colleagues in the Legislature to reject the NY HEAT Act and pursue balanced energy policies that protect New Yorkers’ wallets.
