Slater on the Governor’s State of the State Address

A Statement from Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown)

“The proposals outlined today are the complete antithesis of affordability. Regardless of where you stand on the governor’s agenda, it’s impossible to deny that state spending is completely out of control.

A number of the ideas she proposed are issues my colleagues and I in the Assembly Minority Conference have been raising for years. We’ve been talking about child care for three years, yet we still have no understanding of how the state intends to pay for these enormous commitments. The same is true for workforce training and other areas where we’ve already put forward concrete proposals, only to see the governor repackage them without a solid plan to fund them.

There was notably nothing about investing in infrastructure, despite our roads and bridges crumbling in front of us. And the benefits she promises from her energy policies are years away, while families are struggling to afford their utility bills today. She offered no short‑term direction on how New Yorkers are expected to manage rising costs.

The details matter. In the coming weeks, we look forward to better understanding her vision, but the fundamental question remains on how we’re going to pay for all of this.

If someone you knew was spending beyond their means, you would rightly be concerned about their financial future. New York is no different. Until Albany gets its spending under control and focuses on responsible budgeting, New Yorkers across the state will continue to feel the consequences.”
