Walsh: Let's Keep the Momentum Going

After continued efforts by Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C,I-Ballston) and her colleagues and stakeholders, on Friday, June 5, Gov. Cuomo issued an Executive Order authorizing summer school programs for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

As the ranker on the Assembly Education Committee, Walsh is fully aware of how important in-person instruction is to this vulnerable population of students. Now, Walsh is joining forces with the ranker on the Assembly Mental Health Committee, Assemblywoman Melissa “Missy” Miller (R,C,I-Atlantic Beach), to advocate for the safe and responsible reopening of group home visitation and Day Hab programs.

“Although I’m ecstatic that Gov. Cuomo has finally authorized summer school programs for students with IEPs, New Yorkers of all ages and abilities still need our help,” said Walsh. “As the governor’s office works on guidance for special education summer school programs, we need to keep the momentum going.

“For months, families and caretakers have not been able to visit their children, siblings, cousins or friends who live in group home settings, and Day Hab programs have been closed. This has no doubt had a profound impact on the mental well-being of residents and their families who have had to endure these uncertain times apart. The curve continues to flatten, and these individuals deserve to reunite with their loved ones or return to Day Hab programs to continue working on their skills and be with friends under safe social-distancing protocols.”

In addition to sharing an online petition, Walsh and Miller will be sending letters to Gov. Cuomo, Dr. Kastner of OPWDD and Dr. Zucker of the Department of Health, sharing the stories of New Yorkers and their advocacy for these next steps.
