Walsh Hosts Biannual Blood Drive Amid Continued Critical Supply Shortage in New York

Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C-Ballston) again partnered with the Red Cross to host her second blood drive of 2025 at the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge on Monday, Sept. 8. Blood donations are critical for those undergoing surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses or traumatic injuries. While three in five people are eligible to donate blood, only three in 100 actually do, which is why Assemblywoman Walsh continues to encourage those who are able to donate when they can.

“Most people are fortunate not to experience the need for blood donations, but it is crucial we make every effort to keep blood drives front and center for those who do,” Walsh said. “It takes just minutes to donate, but those minutes can translate into years of life for someone in need. My gratitude goes out to everyone who donated yesterday, and I’d like to offer a heartfelt thanks to the Red Cross, Ballston Spa Elks Lodge and all those who made this drive another success.”

“Yesterday we collected 58 units of blood, surpassing the 46-unit goal set by the Red Cross. This generous contribution reflects the care of our community, especially as New York’s supply of O-negative and O-positive blood types remain critically low, with overall donations running 25% below hospital demand.”

“If you couldn’t make it this time, look out for future blood drives hosted by my office, or click here to find blood donation locations near you through the American Red Cross.”
