Assemblywoman Buttenschon’s Statement on Co-Sponsored Legislation Increasing Scrutiny of Proposed Utility Rate Hikes
“As the cost of living continues to climb, rising utility rates are putting even more strain on Mohawk Valley families. To help provide relief, I co-sponsored and advocated for this week’s passage of legislation that prioritizes affordability and helps ease the burden of soaring energy costs (A.2400-A).
“According to the legislation, the Public Service Commission (PSC) would be required to consider the economic impact of proposed rate hikes on consumers’ ability to pay, including considering the estimated increase on bills, the cost of living, and the average cost of fuel and utilities, before any decisions to approve them. Aiming to ensure families are not priced out of essential services, this legislation strengthens protections for ratepayers and promotes a more balanced, fair, and transparent rate-setting process.
“I’m committed to providing solutions that lower costs and help Mohawk Valley families afford everyday expenses. No one should have to choose between keeping the lights on and making ends meet.”
