Assemblymember Rosenthal Statement on Raising SCRIE/DRIE Income Cap from $50,000 to $75,000
“During state budget negotiations last spring, I successfully pushed for the passage of legislation that raised the Senior Citizen and Disability Rent Increase Exemption programs (SCRIE/DRIE) from $50,000 to $75,000, paving the way for a more affordable future for thousands of New Yorkers. New York City was required to opt into the program, and with today’s vote, nearly five months after the adoption of the 2026-2027 state budget, they have finally done so.
I cannot overstate the importance of the SCRIE and DRIE programs for New Yorkers living on a fixed income. The very people who helped build New York over the decades should not have to fear being priced out of their beloved neighborhoods. These benefits not only keep people in their homes and out of our shelters, but they also allow people to live financially independent lives as they age in place.
As we expand this vital program, we must also expand access and awareness by engaging New Yorkers on the importance of freezing their rents through the SCRIE and DRIE programs. That is why I’m proud that my legislation was passed as part of the 2026-2027 budget requiring notification of the SCRIE/DRIE program on all rental recertifications and Major Capital Improvement applications. We must continue to expand these critical benefits to ensure that more New Yorkers are financially able to call the Big Apple home.”
