Chang and Lawmakers Push Back on Proposed Integration of Homeless and Non-Homeless Populations
Outrage Builds as Long Term Residents Are Forced to Cohabitate with Homeless Transient Tenants
Today, Assemblyman Lester Chang (R,C-Brooklyn) and Sen. Steve Chan (Senate District 17), rallied at 10th Avenue and 50th Street to protest against the integration of homeless transient tenants and residents of the Borough Park apartments.
Many tenants at the Borough Park Apartments have lived there for decades, and now they’re being forced to live alongside homeless transient tenants. Chang and the lawmakers believe this kind of forced integration is unsafe and unacceptable. Chang is taking action, filing a temporary restraining order to stop this plan and fight back against a proposal that threatens public safety.
“We’re making New Yorkers fearful of their own home,” said Chang. “Homelessness is a complex issue that requires a complex solution. This is an unprecedented experiment with no proven track record of success. It is unfair to ask these residents to deal with those problems on their own.”
The housing proposal will hold up to 82 families with 300 total residents, including 100 adults and 200 children. Although Chang acknowledges there needs to be solutions to New York City's homeless crisis, the priority should be permanent, long term housing.
