Following a briefing in Albany by members of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Assembly Minority Whip Karl Brabenec (R,C,I-Deerpark) joined lawmakers from across the state at a press conference today to highlight the dangers of the ‘Green Light Law,’ which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. The law, which a recent Siena Poll shows is opposed by 48 percent of New York voters, allows illegal aliens to apply for a New York State driver’s license.

Brabenec also announced that he has introduced legislation in the Assembly, mirrored by Sen. Chris Jacobs (R-Buffalo), that completely repeals the Driver’s License and Privacy Act, also known as the ‘Green Light Law’. The legislation has not yet been assigned a bill number.

Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders have expressed strong opposition to allowing Customs Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration authorities to access the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) database to improve data sharing efforts. At least 27 county clerks and the New York State Sheriffs’ Association have written to Gov. Cuomo asking for an amendment to the law that allows data sharing for federal law enforcement agencies.

“New York Majority politicians have put criminals and illegal aliens on a pedestal and law-abiding New Yorkers in grave danger,” Brabenec said. “While the Majority plays political games with Washington, criminals are becoming even more emboldened in New York and our law enforcement are met with more obstacles to apprehension. I am calling for a full repeal of the Green Light Law immediately and state leaders to share any and all information requested by federal officials in order to protect national security moving forward.”
