Friend Opposes Redistricting Power Grab by Majority

Statement from Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) on Majority’s’ legislation to change the Independent Redistricting Commission

“I oppose this shameless attempt by the Majority to disrupt a fair and independent redistricting process. This unconscionable act has gained criticism from groups like Citizens Union and the League of Women Voters. The removal of the requirement of a unified, bipartisan approval of new redistricting plans from the Independent Redistricting Commission would give undue powers to Majority politicians sitting on the board, essentially suppressing the voice of the minority. The Independent Redistricting Commission has already been approved by two legislatures and the voting public, this blatant power grab by Majority would suppress the voice of millions of New Yorkers in their representative government.”

The memo of opposition from Citizens Union and the League of Women Voters is attached.
