Maher Joins Bipartisan Push to Strengthen Safety at Nonpublic and Parochial Schools
A press release from Assemblyman Brian Maher’s chief of staff, Meghan Hurlburt.
Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C-Walden) will sign on to a bipartisan budget request calling for increased funding for the state’s Nonpublic School Safety Equipment (NPSE) grant program, which helps nonpublic and parochial schools strengthen security and protect students and staff.
The proposal, led by Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, calls for a $90 million allocation in the 2027 state budget to help schools address rising security costs and evolving safety threats.
“School safety should never be political,” said Hurlburt. “Families in our community—especially those with children attending parochial and other nonpublic schools—have repeatedly raised concerns about security. These schools deserve the same peace of mind and protection as any other. Supporting this funding is simply the right thing to do.”
The NPSE grant program provides funding for security guards, cameras, access controls and other protective equipment. With threats and hate crimes increasing statewide, many faith-based and independent schools are facing steep security costs to keep students safe.
“Once again, Assemblyman Brian Maher is working across party lines to address an important issue concerning the safety of our children. As a graduate of parochial school himself, Most Precious Blood School in Walden, Assemblyman Maher understands the importance of this legislation and the peace of mind it will give to thousands of parents throughout the state. We’re proud to stand with colleagues in advancing a practical, common-sense solution that puts safety first.”
The assemblyman’s office will continue to advocate for funding during the budget process to ensure schools in the Hudson Valley and across New York have the resources they need to safeguard their communities.
