Assemblyman Santabarbara Launches "On-Line version" of Annual Summer Reading Challenge

Program to Inspire Love of Reading during COVID-19

Since COIVD-19 hit, children have been away from the classroom and most continue with on-line learning, Assemblyman Santabarbara is moving ahead with an ‘on-line’ version of his annual Summer Reading Challenge, now in its 8th year. “Especially during these difficult times, it’s important to keep encouraging children to read,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara.

Due to COVID-19 restriction, this year kids can still participate in his annual Summer Reading Challenge by visiting the Assemblyman’s website and downloading the specially prepared materials.

This year’s theme is “Imagine Your Story” motivating young readers to use their imagination as they read. Young readers who participate will be awarded with an Excellence in Reading certificate by mail from Assemblyman Santabarbara recognizing their efforts and dedication.

“Even before COVID-19, the reading that children do over the summer not only allows them to broaden their imaginations and discover exciting new books, it also puts them a step ahead when they return to school in the fall. With kids out of the classroom setting for so long, it’ so important to encourage kids to keep reading,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara.

The challenge asks children to read a book for a minimum of 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during July and August. Children can read on their own or partner with family and friends to mark off days on the calendar provided. Once they’ve completed 40 days or more, they submit the calendar to Assemblyman Santabarbara’s office by email and they will receive their certificate in the mail.

“Reading requires continuous practice, and this challenge can help to ensure that children continue to make progress during this challenging school year”, added Assemblyman Santabarbara.
