Assemblyman Santabarbara Bill to Expand Veterans Property Tax Exemption Passes State Legislature

Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara that expands eligibility for the Alternative Veterans Property Tax Exemption has passed both houses of the State Legislature and is now headed to the Governor’s desk. The bill updates New York’s definition of a “period of war” so more veterans can qualify for the property tax exemption in communities that offer the program.

“This bill updates eligibility for the Alternative Veterans Property Tax Exemption to recognize additional periods of military service,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “It’s a practical change that helps ensure more veterans are included when eligibility is determined.”

The Alternative Veterans Property Tax Exemption helps eligible veterans reduce the property taxes they pay on their homes.

“This legislation reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting New York’s veterans,” Assemblyman Santabarbara said. “I’m proud to help move it forward.”

The bill now awaits action by the Governor.
