Assembly Hearing to Explore Solutions to Strengthen Housing Access for New Yorkers with Disabilities
As housing costs rise and service needs evolve across New York, the State Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities will hold a public hearing to explore new solutions for improving access to safe, supportive housing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, Chair of the Committee, said the hearing will focus on strengthening the system that helps people with disabilities live as independently as possible – by addressing challenges such as staffing shortages, long wait times, and the need for more flexible housing options.
Currently, nearly 35,000 of the 130,000 individuals served by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) live in certified residential settings. But as New York works to expand community-based living and promote inclusion, families and providers continue to look for ways to make the system more responsive, sustainable, and person-centered.
The hearing will bring together individuals with disabilities, family members, advocates, and providers to share ideas and experiences that can help:
- Expand housing choices and availability;
 - Strengthen support programs for greater independence; and
 - Build a more efficient and inclusive system of care.

“Across New York, we’re seeing incredible examples of people and organizations finding creative ways to support independence and inclusion,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “This hearing is about building on that progress – listening to families, sharing ideas, and working together to make sure people with disabilities have the housing and support they need to thrive.”
