Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Urges Increased Funding for HPNAP and Nourish NY in New York State Budget

Letter to the governor calls for $75 million allocation for each program and direct contracts for emergency food relief

Key Points of the letter:

  1. HPNAP Funding: Santabarbara calls for a substantial increase in funding for the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) to $75 million. This vital program supports an extensive network of food pantries and emergency food relief organizations.
  2. Nourish NY: An additional $75 million to Nourish NY, a program that redirects surplus agricultural products to those in need through the state's food bank network.
  3. Direct Contracts: Santabarbara stresses the necessity of providing all emergency food relief programs with the opportunity for direct contracts, ensuring a more streamlined and efficient distribution process.

With the alarming rise in food insecurity from 1 in 10 adults in 2022 to 1 in 4 adults in New York State as of early January 2024, representing a 108% increase, Santabarbara underscores the immediate need for action.

“Let's join forces to be catalysts for change, advocating for increased funding to combat hunger in New York State. Community support is crucial as we work towards a future where no one in New York goes to bed hungry. Thanks to all who stand with us in this important cause.”

Assemblyman Santabarbara actively volunteers with local food pantries like Schenectady Street Soldiers and will be available for media interaction at this week’s food distribution on Sunday, January 21st, at 4:00 PM in the parking lot of Zion Lutheran Church located at 153 Nott Terrace, Schenectady, NY.
