Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful start to the school year and the Fall.
As Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, I'm proud to share that I once again passed more bills in both houses of the Legislature than any other Assemblymember – 38 in total during the 2025 session. This year’s accomplishments include my landmark Medical Aid in Dying legislation, protections for women, and critical government reforms.
In this email I’m highlighting nine key bills that reflect these priorities:
⚖️ A.136 – The Medical Aid in Dying Act – Landmark legislation that gives terminally ill, mentally competent adults the option to request medication to peacefully end their suffering. After years of advocacy, I am proud to have passed this monumental bill through both houses, and we now await the Governor’s signature to make it law.
👩⚖️ A.544B – Domestic Violence Firearms – Strengthens protections for victims of domestic violence by requiring police officers to take custody of firearms when responding to reports of family violence.
📊 A.1970A – Sex Offense Tracking System – Sets clear timelines for law enforcement to collect rape kits from hospitals ensuring evidence integrity and transparency for survivors.
👶 A.2168 – Episiotomy Information for Patients – Requires the NYSDOH to develop, and maternal health providers to share, written information about episiotomy to maternity patients.
👩🍼 A.1165 (A. 3007-C 2025 NYS Budget) – EMTALA Protections – Codifies into state law the longstanding federal requirement that hospitals provide stabilizing care to all patients experiencing emergency medical conditions, including pregnancy-related emergencies. With federal abortion protections under threat, this legislation ensures that pregnant patients in New York will continue to receive necessary emergency care without delay or interference.
💔 A.4023 (A. 3007-C 2025 NYS Budget) – Pregnancy Loss Care – Modernizes New York’s outdated pregnancy loss reporting laws by eliminating mandatory reporting of pregnancy loss caused by induced termination unless specifically requested by the patient. It renames "fetal death" reporting as "pregnancy loss" reporting, ensuring greater sensitivity and protecting patient confidentiality.
🏞️ A.1914 – Buildings Named After Rivers – Renames four agency buildings at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, which are currently identified only by numbers, to honor New York’s historic rivers. This change celebrates our state’s natural resources and transforms the Plaza into an educational space that reflects New York’s history and identity.
🚉 A.589 – Port Authority Reform – Implements key governance, oversight, and transparency provisions which would reform the Port Authority.
🏥 A.7616 – Not-for-Profit Oversight – Amends NY’s Prompt Contracting Law so that not-for-profit corporations who contract with the State receive timely payment, which will allow them to stay afloat and continue to provide key social safety net services to New Yorkers.
I look forward to sharing more highlights with you soon. And as your representative in the Assembly, I always want to hear your views. My staff is available to help you with concerns or questions via any of the methods below:
