McDonough Announces One-Stop Insurance Information Center for Caregivers

Web site and hot line offer important health insurance information to patients and caregivers

State Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) has announced that the New York state Insurance Department has a new Web site designed to be a one-stop-insurance information center. The site will provide important information, for the seriously ill and their caregivers, as well as health insurance rights and how to exercise those rights to ensure proper access to health insurance coverage.

The Web site is www.insurancehelpny.com.

"The user-friendly Web site and toll-free hot line will inform consumers about the issues they may confront when a serious illness occurs," said Assemblyman McDonough. "I urge all consumers to take advantage of this invaluable service because during stressful events such as long-term or serious illness, it is comforting to have, in one place, a useful source of information."

Earlier this year, the state Insurance Department unveiled a toll-free hot line, 1-866-694-6743, which is staffed with consumer representatives, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., who will answer insurance questions specific to individuals who are seriously ill and their caregivers.

Information on the Web site includes:

  • a checklist of questions individuals should ask their insurer and physician;
  • information on prescription drug options and other important health resources for coverage;
  • information on individuals’ rights as a health insurance consumer in New York state and, more specifically, their rights if they are denied coverage;
  • a list of important documents to have at doctor visits, hospital stays and for calls to the insurance company; and,
  • information on experimental and medically necessary procedures, explanation of benefits, external appeal, the health care proxy form, long-term care options, and a glossary of insurance terms.

In addition to the new Web site and hot line, New Yorkers are encouraged to visit the Insurance Department’s on-line Health Insurance Resource Center at www.ins.state.ny.us. The site outlines health insurance consumer rights and provides basic information on various types of health insurance plans. There is also up-to-date information to assist in evaluating and comparing health insurance options and providers.
