Dave McDonough (19th Assembly District) and Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently visited the Merrick Post Office to donate food as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, which will take place on Saturday, May 9th.

“In light of this economic crisis in New York, I have been running a continuous food drive through my office and I am glad to say I have had a tremendous response,” said Assemblyman McDonough. “I hope that the people of Nassau County will continue their generosity through the ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive as well.”

The “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive is the nation’s largest single day food drive. Letter carriers collect nonperishable food items from people’s homes while they are delivering mail along their routes. The food that is collected is then distributed to local food banks, pantries and shelters. Last year’s event collected over 858,000 pounds of food for Long Island families in need.

Residents who would like to participate in the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive should place nonperishable items, such as canned foods, cereals, pasta and rice, in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 9, before their letter carrier arrives. Donations also can be brought to local post offices. All the food collected during the drive will then be delivered to local food banks, pantries and shelters.
