McDonough Joins Governor At Bill Signing That Would Expand Sex Offender Internet Posting

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) today joined Gov. George E. Pataki at a bill signing event held at the Rockville Centre police headquarters. The bill signed into law would expand the online postings of New York’s Sex Offender Registry to include Level 2 offenders.

“The expansion of the Sex Offender Registry will provide parents and communities with the ability to protect themselves from dangerous and violent sexual predators,” said McDonough, the co-chair of the Assembly Minority Sexual Assault and Violence Education Task force (SAVE-NY). “For the past three years the task force has been instrumental in gathering information for new legislation, such as expanding the Sex Offender Registry.”

Currently the website, www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us, lists only Level 3 offenders, the most dangerous and likely to offend. The site will now include Level 2 offenders.

In addition, the law authorizes local law enforcement to provide information on Level 1 offenders.
