NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY
MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION
submitted in accordance with Assembly Rule III, Sec 1(f)

BILL NUMBER: A8467

SPONSOR: Carroll P
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the public health law, in relation to notice to fire departments when oxygen is in use at a residence   PURPOSE: This bill would require the notification of local fire departments of oxygen use at a residence.   SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section one amends the public health law to renumber section 3656 to 3657 and create a new section 3656 to require the notification of local fire departments of oxygen use at a residence. Section two is the effective date.   JUSTIFICATION: When oxygen is used in the home for medical purposes it can intensify fires and accelerate combustion in the event of a fire. This creates a dangerous environment for first responders if they are unaware of such use within a residence when responding to an emergency. This bill would create a process for notification of local fire departments when oxygen is being used within a residence so that they are prepared in the case of a fire.   LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: To be determined.   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
