Making the Holidays Brighter for Our Community
Legislative column from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I-Canandaigua)

'Tis the season for holiday cheer! During this special time of year, we are able to spend time with our families and friends to enjoy festive holiday traditions. As most of us know, the holidays bring joy, happiness and a touch of chaos. As we begin celebrating the holidays, I would like to thank each of you who have helped make someone's holiday brighter by offering your services. Whether you volunteered your time or donated items, your charity is greatly appreciated.

REMEMBERING OUR TROOPS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

For the second year, Assembly members Bob Oaks, Gary Finch, Phil Palmesano and I teamed up with Sen. Mike Nozzolio for our "Holiday Drive for the Troops." The community was asked to donate nonperishable food items and goods such as DVDs and clothing. We received very generous donations and are pleased to say that they are being sent to troops deployed overseas. This year's holiday drive was a great success and we would like to offer a big thank you to those who participated. Your efforts have helped share the holiday spirit with those who cannot be with their loved ones this year.

This holiday season I ask that we all take a moment to remember our service men and women who have sacrificed their holiday traditions to protect our freedom. As the father, son, brother and uncle of U.S. military veterans, I never forget the services that these brave men and women provide for our country. They are the men and women who have endured so much to allow us the liberties we enjoy every day, so please keep them and their families in your hearts this holiday season.

HOW OUR COMMUNITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE

The spirit of volunteerism is alive year-round in our area. According to a report released by the Corporation for National Community Service, our region has been ranked third across the nation for volunteerism. Whether it is serving our neighbors in soup kitchens, caring for our elderly, or donating items that can help someone in need, it is the people who step up to take care of others whose selflessness and generosity make a difference in our community. I hope you all have a joyous and safe holiday season!
