Statement From New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I-Canandaigua) On The Moreland Commission Preliminary Report

"A taxpayer-funded campaign system - as proposed in the Moreland Commission's preliminary report - would do nothing to address the abuses of office that we've seen in state government. Taxpayer-funded political campaigns already exist in New York City, which is home to more public corruption than possibly any other region in the country. The current New York City model has not curtailed corruption and costs millions of dollars each year. Creating an expensive political campaign account from the pockets of hard-working taxpayers is the wrong approach.

Ending the culture of corruption in Albany is a critical part of the upcoming legislative session. It is my sincere hope that the Assembly Majority passes the Public Officers Accountability Act (A.7393), which the Assembly Minority Conference introduced in May to reform member items and campaign finance, implement term limits for legislative leaders, increase corruption penalties, and establish a truly independent ethics commission."
