We have so much to celebrate in New York, and the State Fair gives us an opportunity each year to recognize and appreciate all that the Empire State has to offer. Whether it's showing off our thriving agriculture market, recognizing the many services New York State provides, taking a walk through history, or celebrating our unique and diverse entertainment options, the State Fair brings it all to life for thousands of visitors to see.
With the Great New York State Fair ready to kick off on Thursday, August 22, I want to point out some exhibits that will be on display this year. Some are new and some are perennial favorites, but all of them offer a unique perspective into the Empire State. I hope you get a chance to see some of these for yourself. The fair is held at 581 State Fair Blvd. in Syracuse and runs to September 2.
CELEBRATING NEW YORK'S AGRICULTURAL OFFERINGS
The Pride of New York section will feature a "bounty of fresh agriculture" and food produced right here in New York. New this year are wine, beer and cheese seminars as well as tasting events. There will be a chance to sample "sensational" specialties and buy what you love!
Similarly, the Uncork New York Wine Village highlights some of the finest wines in the Empire State, and as usual, the Finger Lakes will be well represented. A wine tent located at the corner of the International and Horticultural Buildings will have samplings of some of our award-winning "best in country" wines. Last year, the Finger Lakes region's Wagner Vineyards won best in show for their 2011 Riesling Ice.
And, don't miss the Agricultural & Carriage Museums, where the long and prosperous history of one of the state's most important industries will be on display. A fully furnished log cabin, demonstrations by local craftspeople and more than 50 horse-drawn vehicles will also be available for viewing.
REMEMBERING AND HONORING OUR HEROES
During your visit to the State Fair, I also encourage you and your family to spend time at the Veterans and 9/11 Memorial, which originally opened in 1999, expanded in 2001 and unveiled its new features the following year.
The exhibit's "eternal flame," flag pole, bricks and stones commemorating the service of the U.S. military are truly worth experiencing. The 9/11 Memorial honors those who lost lives in the terrorist attacks in 2001 and is located between two portions of the Veterans Memorial.
The New York State Police Exhibit is on display in front of the International Pavilion. As part of the exhibit, a Mobile Response Team will demonstrate a "high angle rescue" and "tactical access" rappelling maneuver from a 50-foot platform. Seeing New York's heroes live in action is an excellent way to appreciate all they do for us and teach our children about their vital work.
This is only a small slice of what the fair has to offer, and we're fortunate to have the fair just a short drive away. Great food, live performances, amazing displays and a wide variety of entertainment options make the State Fair a summer centerpiece for families across Upstate New York.
