On Independence Day We Celebrate Freedom And Democracy For The People
Legislative column from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I-Canandaigua)

On this Fourth of July, we will celebrate another year of America's freedom. This holiday gives us an opportunity to remember the principles this country was founded upon: democracy, equality, liberty and justice. It is my belief that as elected officials, my colleagues and I in the Legislature have an extra responsibility to uphold these values. We must fight to uphold the rights and protections afforded to all citizens in the New York State Constitution and the United States Constitution.

NEW YORK HAS A RICH HISTORY OF PROMOTING AMERICAN LIBERTY

New York was not only the location of a number of battles in the Revolutionary War, but was also one of the country's original colonies. It played a big part in shaping the history of America, and serves as the home to many innovative businesses, great schools, family farms and beautiful rural landscapes.

As a representative in the State Assembly and Leader of the Minority Conference, I have worked tirelessly to help all New Yorkers prosper. As the proud father, son, brother and uncle of U.S. military veterans, I have a profound appreciation for the brave men and women who have defended our nation. What makes the efforts of those who have helped protect American freedom worthwhile is the spirit of entrepreneurship we are afforded -and it should not be wasted. I see so many small business owners and farmers working hard to support their families and make a better life for their children, and again, I am proud.

ON THE FOURTH WE GATHER FOR CELEBRATION

This holiday has many activities, festivities and celebrations to enjoy. In my hometown of Canandaigua, I will be marching in a parade down Main Street. It kicks off at 10 a.m. and is followed by a picnic at Kershaw Park followed by live music and fireworks.

The Seneca County Chamber of Commerce will host a Fourth of July Birthday BBQ Bash from noon to 11 p.m. on July 6 at the American Vineyards. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m.

Also, check http://genevany.com/content/view/fireworks.html and http://visitfingerlakes.com/events/?page=2 for a listing of fireworks displays in Geneva and nearby areas.

Of course the summertime fun associated with Independence Day - grilling with family and friends, lawn games, and of course, fireworks - are all important traditions and help us to celebrate our nation's history. They are, however, only a part of what the Fourth of July means. In addition to enjoying the festivities remember to recognize the sacrifice of all of our veterans. I hope all of you enjoy a prosperous future "in the land of the free and the home of the brave." Have a happy Fourth of July.

And a quick reminder: I will be sponsoring this year's annual summertime blood drive for the 131st Assembly District on July 9, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Canandaigua Inn on the Lake, located at 770 South Main Street, Canandaigua. We are hoping for as many participants as possible to help in this life-saving effort, especially in the summertime, when blood is in high demand.
