“Attorney General Letitia James’ presentation on her completed investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Gov. Cuomo was damning. For nearly six months, I have said there is more than enough public evidence to justify Assembly impeachment proceedings. The governor’s dishonesty over his handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes, his profiteering from a $5+ million book deal and his now-confirmed gross mistreatment of women both inside and outside of the workplace have all passed the threshold for impeachment.
The investigation included interviews with 179 individuals but can be boiled down to one sentence made by the attorney general during her press conference today, “Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws.”
Somehow, this governor still managed to keep control over our state government amid all the public evidence and ongoing investigations. His defiant pre-recorded response to the attorney general’s report was one of the most bizarre, tone deaf and disturbing addresses I’ve ever watched from him during his tenure in public office.
The Assembly impeachment investigation was announced back in March of this year. It's now August and for five months victims have watched the governor travel the state and lecture our fellow New Yorkers while the Legislature neglected to act and hold him accountable. We could have and should have acted earlier - but it’s not too late and there is no more time to waste. The time to act is now.
Everyone is and should be afforded due process, but we mustn’t allow the governor another moment to abuse the powers of his office. The Assembly must vote on an impeachment resolution immediately. The governor will receive his due process during a trial in front of the state Senate, but enough is enough. The evidence, which includes corroborating witnesses, is overwhelming and the Assembly owes it to the numerous women who have accused the governor of sexual harassment and touching to proceed with impeachment immediately.”
