NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY
MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION
submitted in accordance with Assembly Rule III, Sec 1(f)

BILL NUMBER: A3644

SPONSOR: Manktelow
TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the state law, in relation to making sweet corn the state vegetable   PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To establish sweet corn as the official vegetable of New York State.   SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Amends the State law by adding a new section 91 designating sweet corn as the official vegetable of the state of New York.   JUSTIFICATION: New York is home to over 36,600 farms, which cover 23% of the state's land. Our farms are the backbone of our state, providing local, nutri- tious food for us to eat, and employing thousands of people. According to the 2012 Agricultural Census, New York State sells $68 4 million worth of sweet corn per year, not including the ancillary revenue gener- ated from markets for things like popcorn and oils that are derived from the kernels. New York State ranks 4th in the nation in the production of sweet corn, and therefore, the State should recognize it as a component of our overall ranking in the U.S. as an agricultural powerhouse.   PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: 2020-21: Referred to Governmental Operations 2020-21: Held for consideration in Governmental Operations 2021-22: Held for consideration in Governmental Operations   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS: None.   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
