ASSEMBLY STANDING COMMITTEE ON CORPORATIONS, AUTHORITIES AND COMMISSIONS

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

SUBJECT: MTA Acquisition of Private Bus Companies

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact and issues involved with the MTA's potential acquisition of private bus companies serving Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Queens Borough Hall

Friday
May 30, 2003
10:30 a.m.
120-55 Queens Boulevard
Meeting Room 213
Kew Gardens, NY

Transit users in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx have long faced shortfalls in bus service throughout the boroughs. Buses run by both the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and private bus lines fail to provide sufficient service for the rising number of bus commuters. The recent announcement that the MTA would be taking over the private bus companies that serve Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx raises concerns. The MTA has yet to provide solid information about its prospective management of the bus lines now run by the private bus companies. Questions concerning the continued funding support from the City of these buses are still unanswered. The issue of whether this measure would provide the same level of service to customers has yet to be addressed.

TESTIMONY AT THIS HEARING WILL BE BY INVITATION ONLY

Persons invited to present pertinent testimony to the Committee at the above hearing should complete and return the enclosed reply form as soon as possible. It is important that the reply form be fully completed and returned so that persons may be notified in the event of emergency postponement or cancellation.

Oral testimony will be limited to 10 minutes' duration. In preparing the order of witnesses, the Committee will attempt to accommodate individual requests to speak at particular times in view of special circumstances.
