Speaker Heastie Visits Onondaga Community College with Assemblymember Stirpe on Annual Statewide Tour

Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Al Stirpe today toured the Onondaga Community College (OCC) cleanroom and heavy machinery room, to learn about the workforce development programs that will support Micron and give students opportunities in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

“New York is a hub of productivity and growth for the semiconductor industry, and OCC will put students at the heart of that industry,” said Speaker Heastie. “These incredible facilities and programs will give our students the tools they need to succeed in high tech fields and prepare them for bright futures.”

“I’m honored to show Speaker Heastie the workforce development programs available here at OCC as we prepare for the arrival of Micron,” said Assemblymember Stirpe. “These opportunities will be transformational for so many families, and will prepare our students to work on the cutting edge of technology.”

Speaker Heastie, Assemblymember Al Stirpe and Assemblymember Pam Hunter were joined by Dr. Warren Hilton, president of OCC, to tour the college’s cleanroom and heavy machinery room used in training students to work for Micron or other companies in the semiconductor industry. The cleanroom was built with a $5 million state investment, with Micron and Onondaga County providing $5 million each for the facilities.

In 2022, Micron announced its plans to build a $100 million semiconductor facility in the town of Clay. The plant is expected to hire more than 9,000 people and create more than 40,000 additional jobs in the region.
