Agriculture and Tourism

New York State's argi-tourism industries generate billions of dollars in revenue annually for the state. In 2007, agricultural production alone brought in over $4.5 billion.

Agriculture is also a major contributor to New York's tourism industry, with millions of people visiting the state's farms, vineyards, parks, and waterways each year. In 2007, tourists contributed $51 billion to New York's local economy, a 9 percent increase from 2006.

Assemblyman Tom O'Mara understands that agri-tourism is an important aspect of the Southern Tier economy and is working in Albany to provide farmers with the support they need and to enact legislation that will promote, encourage and expand tourism and outdoor activities in New York State.

Here's How:

Extend eligibility of the Farmer's School Tax Credit to include agricultural lands that are leased for a minimum of five years, providing $2 million in tax relief for New York's agricultural industry and enhancing access to farmland and open space preservation in the state. (A.988)

Require ATV registration fees paid to the state to be dedicated to a fund from which grants would be awarded to sportsmen's clubs for ATV trail maintenance and development.

Last year, Assemblyman Tom O'Mara sponsored legislation that created a Junior Big Game Hunting License to promote hunting and legislation that allows rifle hunting for deer and bear in the Southern Tier. This legislation will keep the deer population in control and promote hunting locally.
