Fact: When local taxes are combined with state taxes, New York has the highest tax burden of any large state – 33% higher than the U.S. average. Local taxes in New York State are 79% above the national average1

Fact: If state spending had simply kept pace with the rate of inflation since 1999, New York’s budget would be $18.5 billion lower2

Fact: Currently, New York State pays $5.6 billion annually in debt service. In four years it will be $7.1 billion; one out of every ten dollars paid in taxes. State debt has grown by about 25% in the past five years3

NO NEW TAXES OR FEES
New York’s crushing tax burden kills jobs, hurts families and threatens our quality of life. Brian Kolb voted against last year’s budget which contained $8.2 billion in job-killing taxes and fees. He also opposed all the tax and fee hikes in this year’s spending plan.

In addition to calling for no new taxes or fees, Brian Kolb is leading the fight to deliver real tax relief, enact a property tax cap and ban Albany’s unfunded mandates that drive up local property taxes.

REDUCE GOVERNMENT SPENDING
Over the past decade, state government spending has risen by nearly 70%. Brian Kolb knows this growth is unsustainable. That’s why he is working to reduce spending to shrink the size and cost of state government.

In March, Brian Kolb outlined billions in common-sense budgetary savings, including State Agency consolidations and mergers to close the deficit. Brian Kolb is also pushing for a state spending cap to ensure government finally lives within its means.

STOP BORROWING
The state’s budget deficit has ballooned to $9.2 billion and its debt is now $57.5 billion, approximately $2,940 for every resident. New York’s per capita debt ranking is the nation’s fourth worst.

Brian Kolb wants to stop government borrowing and end “generational theft” that threatens the financial future of all New Yorkers.

He supports eliminating “backdoor borrowing” – borrowing without voter approval – and requiring that any ballot proposition authorizing state debt include information on both the principal and interest incurred by taxpayers.

State government taxes, spends and borrows too much.

That’s why Brian Kolb is leading the fight for fiscal accountability.

His priorities include no new taxes or fees, reducing government spending and stopping borrowing.

New York’s families live within their means. It’s time Albany did the same.
