Supporting Farmers and the Rural Way of Life

No one works harder than the farmers across our state. Unquestionably, the agricultural industry in New York has contributed significantly to the welfare of the state, providing vast quantities of safe, reliable products at low consumer prices. New York’s family farms have served as the backbone of the state’s rural economy; they represent the state’s rich historical and cultural heritage and they provide the scenic byways and agricultural landscapes that have traditionally secured the state’s open space resources.

Across the 123rd Assembly District, farm families are important neighbors, actively involved in their communities through a host of local organizations and by employing local workers. Many farmers are second or third generation and feel a strong sense of responsibility to preserve their farms and communities for future generations.

I am pleased this year we passed the Dairy Assistance Program, which I supported. The program provided $30 million in cash payments to eligible dairy farmers to alleviate the burden of low milk prices paid to farmers last year. As your Assemblyman, I am committed to ensuring the rural way of life is preserved through legislative measures that help the farming community.

Sincerely,
signture

Assemblyman Gary D. Finch supports a number of initiatives which are meant to promote the farming industry, as well as provide relief for dairy and other farmers across New York State:

  • New York Farmer Recruitment and Retention Act - An Agricultural Scholarship and Loan Forgiveness Program for full-time farmers with incentives for young people to enter the farming profession.

  • Agriculture Alternative Energy Loan Program - Provides a low-interest loan program to farmers for the construction of manure digesters that will turn animal by-products into energy.

  • CAFO Revolving Loan Program - Provides a low-interest loan to farmers for the necessary capital for containment and reduction of animal waste.

  • County Farmland Protection Plan - Provides state help for counties to update their plan or developing a new farmland protection plan. Protecting our farmland helps ensure our rural heritage is there for future generations.
