Flood Recovery Update

Dear Neighbor,

The devastating floods of last summer caused lasting effects we can still feel today. With the cleanup complete, we now are experiencing a phase of recovery that can be lengthy. Over $17 million in grants have been approved by state government to help individuals with rebuilding what was lost. I have provided extra help with an additional $20,000 to rebuild essential services and community spaces.

This session, the Legislature enacted the “Flood Assessment Relief Act of 2007,” which allows for municipalities in Broome and Tioga to reassess property that’s been damaged by the flood. A taxpayer whose real property was “catastrophically impacted” (property value diminished by 50% or more) by the June 2006 flood may seek an administrative review of his or her real property valuation.

If approved by the respective local governments, a taxpayer whose property was damaged by the floods must file a petition of review with the Board of Assessment Review as soon as possible.

If you have any concerns or need assistance as the recovery process continues, please contact me through my office in Tioga County, which is fully operational and here to serve your needs. My office has a new location at 16 Court Street, Owego, NY 13827. My office can also be telephoned at a new number, (607) 687-8272.

Sincerely,
