Expanded DNA database will help catch more offenders

Violent criminals don’t specialize in one kind of crime and are often convicted of lesser crimes before committing other, more serious offenses. That is why I fought to expand our state’s DNA database.

Since 1996, New York’s DNA database covered only felonies and helped convict over 2,900 felons. Under the new law, DNA samples from defendants convicted of ALL felonies and penal misdemeanors in the Empire State would be collected.

The expanded DNA database is the first in the nation, and I’m proud to have helped make it happen.
