Millman Celebrates Park(ing) Day

Assemblywoman Joan Millman and District Leader Jo Anne Simon joined constituents Dr. David Bloomberg and David "Paco" Abraham at a park(ing) spot Mr. Abraham created on Court Street in Cobble Hill to celebrate International Park(ing) Day. The worldwide event reclaims over 200 parking spaces in over 50 cities to make a statement about the lack of public parkland in cities by turning metered parking spots into human-friendly spaces. Throughout the five boroughs of New York City, over 50 interested citizens and groups received permits to create a small "park" for a day in a metered parking spot, often incorporating a theme to attract the attention of passersby. Mr. Abraham's spot, titled "Stay-cation Park" featured a sod lawn, board games, plants, chairs and a sandwich board where people could write their reflections.

"I witnessed the positive reactions to Stay-cation Park and other park(ing) spots in the city," said Millman. "People smiled, stopped to enjoy the space or wrote their thoughts on the sandwich board. This event highlights the need for more green space in our borough and throughout the city. Next year, my staff and I are looking forward to creating a park(ing) space in front of my office on Smith Street."

Millman and Brooklyn District Attorney Hynes School
Parents on Internet Safety
Assemblywoman Millman and Brooklyn District Attorney Charles "Joe" Hynes welcomed parents back to school with an informative Internet safety seminar at Public School 58. The presentation is part of an effort by the DA's Cyber Crimes Bureau to significantly reduce Internet crimes committed against children. Through sharing tips with parents, the DA's office hopes to diminish the "digital divide" between a generation that grew up with the Internet and parents who are less familiar with technology.

"I commend District Attorney Hynes for bringing this issue to the forefront of many parents' minds," Millman said. "Thanks to this initiative, parents in Brooklyn are becoming more aware of safe ways for their children to use the web. The Internet is such a valuable educational tool, but parents must provide their children guidance."

Some important tips for parents include: establishing rules for Internet use, opening a dialogue with their children about their online activities, placing the computer in a common room, not in the child's bedroom, keeping informed about your child's Internet usage, ensuring the child knows not to divulge personal information to an unknown source, and be aware of any other locations where your child may also use the Internet. For more information, parents can visit the Net Smartz Web site and to report an incident, parents can call the Cyber Tipline at 1-800-843-5678 or visit the Cyber Tipline Web site.
