Dear Neighbor,
I am devoting this newsletter to seniors. In our fast paced world, we often take what we
have for granted. Our seniors have worked hard to mold this community into what each and
every one of us enjoys today. That’s why senior concerns have been, and continue to be, a
high priority of mine both in Albany and here in our community.
I hope that you will read through this special newsletter to learn about some of the
things I have done with seniors over the past year. I have also included some information
that may be useful to you. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to
contact me.
With best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Steven H. Cymbrowitz

Assemblyman Cymbrowitz Brings Attorney General Cuomo’s Safe Seniors Program to our Community
Aware that senior citizens are often the targets of scams, Assemblyman Cymbrowitz asked
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office to talk to the senior centers in his district. An
Assistant Attorney General visited the centers to give a presentation, distribute informative
handouts and answer questions. “I appreciate Attorney General Cuomo’s concern for our seniors,
” Assemblyman Cymbrowitz stated. “My district office learns of these scams from constituents
when they come in to seek help. My goal is to provide seniors with the information they need
to protect themselves from becoming victims.”
In addition to educating seniors about scams, Assemblyman Cymbrowitz works closely with 61st
Precinct Commander, Capt. Georgios Mastrokostas, to make sure that seniors in our community
are not only safe, but feel safe.
Assemblyman Cymbrowitz Continues to Support Local Senior Centers
Assemblyman Cymbrowitz Visiting our Senior Centers
Our community is fortunate to have a variety of excellent senior centers. Each has its own
“flavor,” but they all have caring staffs and volunteers whose single goal is looking out
for our seniors. Acknowledging the importance of these centers, Assemblyman Cymbrowitz
provides New York State grants to help fund their programs. The programs vary from center
to center but include recreational, educational, entertainment and health offerings. “It
is important that our community shows the respect that is due the people who have
contributed to making this community the neighborhood we all are happy and proud to live
in,” Assemblyman Cymbrowitz explained. “I enjoy visiting the centers because there is so
much warmth and energy. Not only do I get to talk with my senior neighbors, but it’s
important that I hear what they have to say. Often I enjoy the day’s activities with the
members.”
Staying healthy can take work. Eating right, exercising, visiting the doctor, and just generally
living a healthy lifestyle all take effort. To make things a little easier Assemblyman Cymbrowitz
sponsors health screenings and talks in his community office. It’s been proven that finding out about
a health concern early gives you the best chance for a complete recovery. That’s why Assemblyman
Cymbrowitz continues to sponsor free health screenings and talks in his community office. Please
read through the schedule and call or e-mail his office to make an appointment for any that are of
interest to you. All are from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., except as noted.
Assemblyman Cymbrowitz Bridges the Generation Gap at Senior Center
Assemblyman Cymbrowitz called on his social work training in creating a program that joins
students from PS 370 with members of the Jay-Harama Senior Center. The students visit the
center every other week and interact with the seniors, playing bingo, dancing, doing arts and
crafts, reading together and performing. Assemblyman Cymbrowitz called the program, “A win-win
situation with both the young and senior participants getting something important out of it.
While there will always be somewhat of a generation gap, it is important that we do what we can
to help each generation understand the other.”
It’s important that everyone in our community is counted in this spring’s 2010 Census since
government money and programs are allocated by population. Assemblyman Cymbrowitz wants you to be
careful; con men may impersonate Census personnel to obtain your personal information. Census
personnel will NEVER ask for your Social Security Number or banking information. Also, they will
NEVER contact you by e-mail. Do not open any e-mails claiming to be from the Census Bureau.
Legitimate Census employees will have a badge, handheld device, Census Bureau canvas bag and a
confidentiality notice. If you have any questions or doubts about whom you are dealing with,
call the Census Bureau at 1 800-923-8282.
