Assemblyman Tom McKevitt

Dear Neighbor:

As your new assemblyman, one of my top priorities is to meet the needs of the residents of Nassau County. As your elected official, I am here to assist you as best I can.

This Constituent Outreach Guide contains information on my RESTORE NY plan which addresses topics like investing in education, providing property tax relief and keeping our communities safe.

My staff and I are here to help you with whatever issues you may have. We are here to answer questions and to address concerns that you may have regarding state government. We can also assist you in dealing with federal and local governments.

This guide also contains a card on which you can let me know your opinion about the most important issues facing Nassau County. I want to know which topics concern you the most. Simply print and fill out the card, and mail it back to my district office. I look forward to hearing from you! Your feedback will help me to provide a stronger foundation for Long Island’s future!

Sincerely,

This year, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt was able to provide a record increase in funding for Nassau County’s schools. They will receive $681 million, a $62 million increase over last year. It is incumbent upon school districts to responsibly allot these funds to create the best schools possible. McKevitt is working to ensure the best education for our children and to increase accountability in New York’s school districts by:

  • Strengthening the School Financial Accountability Act by requiring transparency in education finance, allowing taxpayers to review school district finances

  • Protecting hard-working taxpayers by creating a State Office of Financial Oversight & Accountability for school districts

  • Giving $72.86 million back to the taxpayers through Restoration Aid for the 2006-07 school year to help correct previous shortfalls

  • Increasing funding for after school programs

  • Bringing almost $4 million in aid to libraries in Nassau County, an increase of almost $250,000 more than originally proposed.

“Residents of Long Island pay the highest property taxes in the state. We need to bring them relief now!”

- Assemblyman Tom McKevitt

Residents of Long Island are forced to deal with a crushing property tax burden. McKevitt’s plan would halt rising taxes and put money back in the pockets of New York’s residents by:

  • Increasing STAR exemptions to reflect current home values

  • Providing an average of $199 in Co-STAR rebates for Nassau County seniors

  • Providing rebates directly to the taxpayer

  • Saving Nassau County homeowners nearly $290 by eliminating waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program and returning the savings to hard-working taxpayers.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our thriving economy. In order to ensure the prosperity of our small businesses, my colleagues and I offer up a plan to save them money and to provide incentives for training and education, while keeping operating costs down.”

-Assemblyman Tom McKevitt

RESTORE NY would help Long Island’s small businesses by:

  • Creating a Small Business Energy Tax reduction

  • Increasing the sales tax vendor credit to 10 percent

  • Establishing a Small Business Tax Credit for businesses that provide job training to employees.
