SAFE Act Deadline Doubles Down On Tax Day Pain

April 15th has long been a day of financial pain, but today has more than just monetary implications as today marks a registration deadline in New York’s controversial SAFE Act law. Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C – East Aurora), author of A.6238, which authorizes a full repeal of the law, and a small businessman, found the timing of the deadline interesting.

“I don’t know what it is about progressives that makes them gravitate toward tax day like it’s some sort of national holiday,” DiPietro said. “Not only are we beaten up by a federal government which will collect more in taxes than at any other point in history, we are hit with the highest state tax burden, and then, on top of that, if you do not register your firearm because of aspects deemed ‘scary’ by a small group of elitists with no gun knowledge to speak of, you risk your firearms getting confiscated. This isn’t how a free society operates.”

DiPietro would continue, “We have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and every single elected official swears to uphold this right in their oath of office. By continuing to double down on the SAFE Act, they are showing no regard for this oath. We have to begin taking this oath seriously, and we have to begin treating the citizens of this state with the respect they deserve. We must look to cut taxes and reinstate the U.S. Constitution in New York State.”
