Friend: Ban DMV From Selling Our Personal Data

Assemblyman Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) is calling on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to stop selling all personal data effective immediately. It has recently come to light that the DMV made $60 million through the sale of personal data last year.

“The DMV shouldn’t be in the business of selling personal data we are legally required to give them,” Friend said. “The DMV has put countless individuals in danger of having their identities stolen by selling this information to the highest bidders. We don’t know who is purchasing this information or what they want it for. The government shouldn’t be in the business of wheeling and dealing private citizens’ information for profit. This information should solely be going toward essential services like recall notifications. Our information shouldn’t be packaged and sold. This process has to be halted immediately, and we should ensure this can never happen again before we adjourn for the year.”
