Friend: Shameful Majority Re-Elects Scandal-Plagued Silver

Assemblyman Christopher S. Friend (R,C,I –Big Flats) today condemned the Assembly Majority’s re-election of Speaker Sheldon Silver. Silver has recently come under federal investigation for his outside earnings and has a past marred in scandal.

“The decision of the Assembly Majority to re-elect Sheldon Silver as Speaker is one that defies logic,” Friend said. “Speaker Silver oversaw the payment of over $100,000 to female staffers who were victims of sexual misconduct by former Assemblyman Vito Lopez. He has recently drawn the eye of the federal government for his inability to report outside incomes to the public. This recent matter is still under investigation.

“Should Speaker Silver remain in that role until the end of this legislative term, he will become the longest-tenured Speaker in New York State Assembly history,” Friend continued. “The Majority made making history more important than the ethical standing of our Chamber. This is something that cannot be forgiven or forgotten. New York deserves better from the ‘People’s House.’”
