Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Tompkins Square Park Playground
On August 19, 2009, New York City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe led a ribbon cutting for the new Tompkins Square Avenue A Playground, which now includes the East Village’s only sandbox, new play equipment that encompasses a Climbing Zone and Spinning Zone, and tables created from recycled components of the old play equipment.
Joining Benepe to celebrate the occasion were Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, former New York Giants Running Back and founder of Tiki Recreation, Tiki Barber, Committee Board 3 Parks Committee Chair Richard Ropiak and District Manager Susan Stetzer, Manhattan Borough Parks Commissioner William Castro and Tompkins Square Park Manager Robert McLean, and Cameron Peterson, representing Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, who was on vacation this week.
Following the ceremony, the new kid-activated water play area came to life for the first of what is sure to be many times this summer and in the years to come. The project was funded through the City budget, with Stringer and Mendez helping to secure the funds.
