Simotas Honors Summer Readers

November 7, 2012
Astoria, NY – Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas honored several local students who completed her Summer Reading Challenge. Each summer, Simotas challenges local young people to read every day and provides them with an age appropriate reading list and a calendar to mark their progress.

Simotas’ program encourages students to delve into books and embrace reading outside of class. "I developed my love of reading at the local branch of the Queens Public Library, with lots of encouragement from my parents,” Simotas explained to the honorees. “There is nothing more important than being able to explore your imagination and expand your knowledge between the pages of a good book.”

The honorees embraced the challenge and told the Assemblymember about their favorite books and classes at school, as well as their ambitions. “These bright young people are proof of the power of reading,” said Simotas. “Education breeds success, and encouraging reading among our community’s youth is a great way to ensure that the next generation is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
