McKevitt: New York State Soon Will Have the Toughest DWI Laws in Country

Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R, C, I – East Meadow) today announced that the Assembly has come to an agreement on “Leandra’s Law.” This legislation will make it a felony to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher when a child under the age of 15 is a passenger in the vehicle. It also will require a breathalyzer ignition lock to be installed on vehicles owned and operated by a person convicted of driving while intoxicated.
“I am elated that the Assembly soon will be passing ‘Leandra’s Law,’ which gives our state the toughest DWI laws in the country. Hopefully, individuals will now think twice before getting behind the wheel after having too much to drink, especially when there is a child on board. When it comes to the well-being of our children, and other innocent motorists, we cannot be strict enough with our DWI laws. It is my hope this legislation will pass in a prompt and expedited fashion.”
